Please Note: As per the newly announced National Education Policy, by the Government of India, MPhil has been scrapped across the country and the emphasis has been placed on the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree followed by a Ph.D. This move helps students who are planning on appearing for the GRE. The other benefit that the NEP 2020 seeks to achieve by eliminating MPhil is that most students who choose a Ph.D. program will be able to save two years and begin their Ph.D. journey right away.

The MPhil program was initially started as a passage between the Master’s Program and Ph.D. Because in India, in most Master’s programs it is not mandatory to submit a dissertation.

Before the NEP, MPhil was not a requirement for those wishing to pursue a Ph.D. It is a stepping stone to university teaching positions, but students who have passed the National Eligibility Test can apply for them as well (NET). For many people, MPhil was only a taste of research before deciding whether or not they wanted to pursue it further. MPhil allowed students to research to write their first dissertation. This helped with well-executed and quality research at the end of my Ph.D.

Students who choose a three-year Bachelor's degree will write their first thesis when they enroll for a Ph.D., as the current NEP 2020 does not require a dissertation component at the Master's level.

However, it is important to note that this move will be implemented in or after the academic year 2021-2022 and won’t affect the students who are currently enrolled in the program.
