A Dentist is a doctor who maintains his patient’s oral health. A Dentist is a health professional who diagnoses and treats oral malfunctions related to the jaw, gums, and teeth. In simple words, the study of the oral structure and treatment of the teeth and other oral issues are known as dentistry. Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Candidates who are aspiring for admission to the course are required to fulfill the following minimum eligibility criteria. 
  2. Candidates must have completed 10+2 from a recognized educational Board with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as the main subjects 
  3. The medical entrance exam NEET-UG, which is taken on a national level, is a mandate for this course. A valid NEET UG score is required. 
  4. A candidate must have a minimum aggregate score of 50% (for the unreserved category) and 40% (for the reserved category) in their 12th Board Exam. 
  5. There is an age limit of a minimum of 17 years and a maximum of 25 years for appearing in the NEET-UG course.

Career Options & Scope after Dentistry

Orthodontists: Their job role is to study dental records, examine medical histories, design teeth models, and make a patient's treatment plan. They correct the irregularities in the patient's teeth by putting devices or other dental appliances. 

Oral Surgeons: They are responsible to correct facial deformities, performing complicated extractions, treating tumors and other abnormal growth in the gums and jaws, and performing surgeries related to the mouth. 

Periodontists: They are the specialized dentists who are responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases such as gums and tissues which support teeth. They are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures. 

Endodontists: Their job role is to study the tooth pulp and to treat the root canals. They specialize in root canals and treat the diseases of the dental pulp which includes blood vessels and nerves. 

Pedodontists: They specialize in children’s dental treatment and care. 

Prosthodontists: They construct oral prostheses to replace the missing teeth to repair the structures, correct acquired and natural deformation of jaws and mouth, and maintain a healthy oral function which includes such as chewing and speaking.

Salary Prospects for Dentist

A career as a dentist has a lot of perks when it comes to financial gains and comes along with job security. It is also considered a very respectable job. The average pay for a dentist at the beginning of his career is roughly around Rs.7,00,000. After a few years of practice and experience, their salary can range between Rs.10,00,000 to Rs. 15,00,000 per year. After pursuing MDS the chances of earning a better salary are high as an MDS usually takes 4 to 6 lakh per annum. Salaries can also vary from city to city as medical expenses and dental charges in metro cities are more than in small cities and towns.
