Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is an integrated Indian medical degree. This degree is awarded to students who have studied contemporary medicine as well as traditional Ayurveda. It is an undergraduate-level medical course that can be pursued after the 12th Standard in Science stream by students who had Biology, Chemistry, and Physics as their core subjects. In this medical course, students study ayurvedic medicine for five and a half years. An internship is a compulsion in the last year of this degree. This is important because it helps students learn practical stuff like how to treat patients by using different ayurvedic medicines/ medicinal processes. 

Advantages of BAMS

Ayurveda is one of the oldest medical systems, dating back to the Vedic period. Its medications are notable for the natural materials they contain and are based on the healing qualities of herbs. The Ayurveda medicine system is considered as an alternative way of therapy, not only treating and preventing diseases but also lessening the frequency with which diseases enter the human body. It makes use of the body's self-healing system. People all around the world are now accepting this alternative healing practice. Even the World Health Organization has provided a global forum for promoting traditional health systems like Ayurveda. 

Eligibility Criteria For Getting Admission BAMS In College: 

To get enrolled in any of the BAMS colleges all over India, it is mandatory for all students of the General category to get a minimum of 50% and for SC/ST/OBC should have 40% in class 12th in science stream ( physics, chemistry, biology ) in any of the recognized boards. 

Along with that, students should appear in an exam conducted by the CCH by the ministry of Ayush or other state-level CET exams and score a minimum qualifying cutoff percentile to get admission in BAMS courses across India. 

Some colleges may have a minimum age limit set for this course. 

Candidates who meet the above requirements must sit for and pass the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET). The NEET merit list is used to determine admission to the BAMS program. 

Job Opportunities After BAMS: 

In the current scenario, there are a plethora of jobs in the Ayurvedic field i.e., after the completion of the BAMS degree. One can opt. for both the public sector and private sector.  But the most common option for completing a BAMS degree is either to pursue higher studies or to open a clinic for personal practice.

Candidates can also opt for the following professions after the completion of their BAMS degree: 

Physician: Students can serve a role of an ayurvedic physician at an initial level under the guidance of a senior doctor. 

Teacher: Teaching in different BAMS colleges or ayurvedic institutes is one of the favorable options. But for the option of teaching, it becomes mandatory to complete a master's degree whether it be an MD in ayurvedic medicine or a postgraduate diploma in the subject of your choice. 

Health Supervisor/ Therapist: It is also one of the most opted options and in this field, you can get associated with many international clients.
