Oftentimes it's hard to take a follow-up after giving an interview. Sometimes organizations can take weeks to decide if you are the right fit or not. You can keep on interviewing at other places, meanwhile, if you want to know the status of your interview there are a couple of things you can do to know it.

Send a thank-you note

Within 2 days of the interview, you can send a thank-you note to the organization. Sending a thank-you note will leave a positive note on your potential employer. You can keep your email brief and thank them for their time, you can also show interest and excitement about the future and the growth of the organization. If you feel there was some specific conversation during the interview, you can bring it up.

Example

Dear (Manager)

Thank you very much for giving me your time and the opportunity to be interviewed by you. I enjoyed learning about your company and the work structure.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

The first follow up

The candidates are always in a dilemma to call up directly or to take a follow-up via mail. The suggested method is to mail instead of call. You can send mail directly to the person who was responsible for your interview, it can be the HR/Hiring officer/Manager.  Ensure that you don't write more than 3 paragraphs and keep the conversation short. You can follow the below given example to make a meaningful impact.

Example

Dear (HR/Hiring Manager)

I wanted to follow up on my interview, I was wondering if you have any updates regarding it. I enjoyed my conversation during the interview and I am impressed with the growth of the company. I feel it’ll be a good place to envision my bright future.

Please let me know if any additional information I can provide.

Thanks,

The second follow up

There are two different ways you can send an email for a second follow-up. Either in this whole duration, you were applying elsewhere and have been offered a job by any other organization and you can show it to ask if you should wait/join or you just want to take another follow-up to know the status of your interview.

Thanks,

If you get an offer elsewhere

Dear (HR/Hiring Manager)

I wanted to take a follow-up of my interview on (date) for (position). I‘ve been offered a job for (role) at another organization. However, I find the job offered by you more interesting and am looking forward to working with you. If you have any updates regarding the position kindly let me know.

Thanks,

2. A normal second follow-up

Dear (HR/Hiring Manager)

I just wanted to take a follow-up on my previous mail. If you have any updates regarding my interview kindly let me know whenever you have the time.

Thanks,

Feedback

It may happen that you don’t get the job that you were looking for and now you’ve got to start hunting for new jobs. In this situation, you can ask for feedback from the organization to know what went wrong and what you can improve to increase your chances of getting a good opportunity.

Example

Dear (Manager)

I am disheartened to know I couldn't get the job in your organization. Thank you very much for giving me your time. I have a small request to make, can you please give me constructive feedback on my interview to help me understand what I can do better in future to improve my chances of getting a job.

Thanks,

Remember, there is no particular time frame to know when or how you’ll get selected after an interview. So just try to give your best and leave all the rest. You can send the notes in different phases to know the status of your job, but in the end, it’ll be decided based on your performance, so make sure you focus on improving it.
